F-18 Interceptor has to be one of the most popular games to have ever
been released on the Amiga computer. The game first appeared in 1988, and
it was also packaged with the Amiga 500 for quite some time, so I think
most people must have played it. One of the few drawbacks of the game is
the fact it can't be installed on a hard disk drive. You must remember
back in 1988, a hard drive was an expensive peripheral owned by few.
These days, it seems if you don't own a hard drive you are in the
minority. The Amiga 1200 comes with a hard drive as standard and the
price of add-on hard drive has dropped dramatically. So, when I went out
and bought a hard drive, the first thing I wanted to install on the hard
drive naturally was Interceptor. I copied all the files into a drawer of
their own and loaded it up. `Please insert volume Df0:' came the reply.
At this time I thought `Oh well, so much for that idea' and proceeded to
keep running it off floppy disk.
Recently, the topic of discussion on bulletin boards swung towards
Interceptor, and I asked if anyone knew how to install it. I received
replies mentioning several different methods, but the one described below
gave the best results.
STEP 1
o Create a drawer on your hard drive to store all the necessary files.
E.g. Work:Games/F-18Interceptor
o Copy over all the files on the disk, except for the s: directory etc.
STEP 2
o Using your favourite text editor, create a script file called F-18, like
the one listed below,
assign df0: dismount
[this removes the name `df0' from your
internal floppy drive]
assign df0: "Work:Games/F-18Interceptor"
[This assigns the path `df0' to the
directory the game is in]
"df0:F-18 Interceptor"
[This starts the game]
STEP 3
o Using a directory utility or a Shell, change the game icon `F-18
Interceptor.info' to `F-18.info'.
o Using IconEdit, change its type from TOOL to PROJECT.
o Through Icon Information, make its default tool ICONX (to run the
script)
If you follow these steps correctly, you should now have F-18
Interceptor successfully running off hard drive. The only way to exit is
re-boot, so you don't have to worry too much about having renamed your
internal floppy drive.
A WORD OF WARNING:
Please remember the F-18 Interceptor is commercial software copyrighted
to Electronic Arts, so only carry this installation out on legitimate
copies of the game. Don't be a pirate! Also, no responsibility is taken
for damages caused by following the above advise. It works fine on my
Amiga, so it should not be any problem, anyway.
